Sportswriter. He was a baseball journalist for the "Detroit News" for 50 years. He covered Detroit Tigers, local high school sports, and local college sports.While the Detroit Lions, Pistons, and Red Wings were also covered by him. Joe Falls was honored with the J.G. Taylor Spink award for excellence in baseball writing in 2001.Longtime sportswriter for the Detroit News, Joe Falls died at 76, of a heart failure.He covered 50 World Series, 20 U.S. Opens and Masters Golf Tournaments, 25 Indy 500s, 20 Kentucky Derbys, and 15 Super Bowls. He was also a member of the Baseball Hall of Fame.In 1960 the Times went under and he moved to the Detroit Free Press. Later he became a sports editor, and in '78, he joined the staff of The News. Falls was inducted into the writer's wing of the Baseball Hall of Fame in 2002.
