His first marriage was to Eula Proffitt that resulted in two children, J. D. and Gladis. After he and Ula divorced, he married Ruth Savage and became the father of two daughters, Jettie Fay, and Minnie Lee. Tragically, Ruth passed away at the age of 29 leaving Bert the lonely task of caring for his family. Later in life, Bert was to meet and marry the apple of his eye, Ella.
Ella and Bert lived in Bonham, Texas for the remainder of their years. Often sending gifts of letters, novels, homemade jams, breads, and the most enourmous home-grown apples to their step-grandchildren.
Bert's failing health eventually forced him to retire to the nearby nursing home. He passed away on June 14, 1977 in Fannin County at the age of 90 years.
