The city of Manhattan was the scene of a most unfortunate tragedy, and is mourning the loss of one of its most well-known and beloved residents. The body of 62 year old Katherine L. Finch of Manhattan was discovered by her husband, Willard Finch, Sunday afternoon, November 13, at about 12:30 p.m., upon his return from church services.

According to the Gallatin County coroner's office, Mrs. Finch's death was caused by a self-inflicted gunshot wound which occurred between noon and 12:15 p.m.

The Gallatin County Sheriff's Department was assisted in the incident by the Highway Patrol, County Coroner and the Manhattan Police Department.

She was born in Crane on April 22, 1915, the daughter of Charles and Emma Wyman Dupuis. She lived at Crane near Sidney, up the Gallatin Canyon, where she went to school, then to Gallatin Gateway and then to Manhattan where she graduated from high school as salutatorian of her class.

She married Willard Finch March 2, 1935 and together they owned the L&F Super Market for 30 years.

She was an active member of the Manhattan Bible Church. She was also an active worker of the P.T.A. She was a member of the Montana Women's Bowling Association and was a member of the Senior Citizens in Manhattan.

She is survived by her husband, two sons, Charles and Clark, of Manhattan; two daughters, Sharon Weidenaar of Sioux Falls, South Dakota and Kathy McFadgen of Stevensville; her mother, Mrs. Emma Dupuis of Sioux Falls, South Dakota; three brothers, Wyman (Fritz) of Sioux Falls, South Dakota, Charles Francis of Bellevue, Washington, and Lawrence of Divide; eight grandchildren, Jon, Kim, David and Rhonda Weidenaar of Sioux Falls, Heather Finch of Manhattan, Robin, Randy and Brenda Finch, all of Manhattan and numerous nieces and nephews.

Services were held Wednesday at 2 p.m. at the Manhattan Bible Church with the Rev. LeRoy Ensign officiating. Interment was in the Meadowview Cemetery at Manhattan.

Organist was Mrs. William Dyk and vocalists were Kim Weidenaar and Norman DeBoer.

Active pallbearers were Dr. Edward King, Hal Damuth, Leo Clinton, Carl Hanson, Ed Elliot and Roger Torringa. Honorary pallbearers were Al Bristol, Dennis VanAbbema, Howard Mattson, Carl Jensen, Verne Heinrich and Bob Lilyblade.
