William Jerome Finch died Wednesday at his Manhattan home. He was 79.

He was born September 9, 1912, in Brampton, N.D., to Jerome T. and Eva May (Haight) Finch. He moved to Manhattan as a teenager, graduated from Manhattan High School in 1931, and attended Western Montana College in Dillon for a year.

He married Katherine Dupuis in March 1937, and she preceded him in death on November 13, 1977. Over the years he worked for the Manhattan Elevator and Feed Mill, served as postal clerk and clerk of Manhattan schools. In 1946, he and George Lambert purchased the Manhattan Grocery, naming it L&F Grocery. Finch became the sole owner of the store in 1948 and he operated it until his retirement in 1976. He then sold the business to his son Clark.

He married Alyce K. Feddes on September 15, 1979, at Soldiers Chapel, and they lived at 2960 Churchill Rd. He was a member of the Manhattan Volunteer Fire Department, a former member of the Manhattan Bible Church where he was a deacon. He was a member of the Bethel Christian Reformed Church at the time of his death. He enjoyed people and loved to travel.

He was preceded in death by a sister, Vera.

Survivors include his wife, Alyce, of Manhattan; sons, Charles W. of Bozeman, and Clark L. of Manhattan; daughters, Mrs. Sharon Weidenaar of Elko, Minn., and Mrs. Mark (Kathy) McFadgen of Stevensville; stepchildren, Dan and Arlene Lubbers of Bozeman, Jim and Sandy Feddes of Grand Rapids, Mich., Cal and Jeanne Feddes of Bellflower, Calif., and Chuck and Carol Feddes of Manhattan; 13 grandchildren; 12 step-grandchildren, and 11 great-grandchildren.

Funeral services will be at 2 p.m. Monday at the Bethel Christian Reformed Church in Manhattan. Interment will be at the Meadowview Cemetery in Manhattan. Memorials in his name may be made to the Gallatin Hospice, Bozeman.
