Thomas Ray Carpenter was born on March 28, 1942 in Fairview, Major County, OK to Mervin and Orene Smith Carpenter. He moved to Montana while a young child and lived briefly in Clifton, Co. He had one brother, Larry and two sisters, Rosetta and Patsy.He graduated from Manhattan High School in 1961 and joined the US Marine Corp serving until 1964. He married Phyllis Ruth Wilson in Grand Junction, CO on April 12, 1963. They were the parents of three children: Thomas Clay, Sheila Claudine and Cory Don. He joined the Colorado State Patrol in 1968 and was stationed in Lafayette, CO.in Boulder County. His office later changed to Broomfield, CO. On December 27, 1973, he was kidnapped and shot in the line-of-duty in Montbello, Denver County, CO.
