Animator. Born José Luis Cuauhtémoc Meléndez, he is considered a pioneer in animation, best known for bringing the "Peanuts" characters to life in films and television. He began his career in the 1940s, as a animator at Walt Disney Studios and Warner Bros. In 1959, he met "Peanuts" creator Charles M. Schulz, formed a life long partnership, which resulted in Melendez putting the "Peanuts" kids in sixty-three half-hour specials, five one-hour specials, four feature films and more than 372 commercials. He also animated "Garfield on the Town," "Cathy," "Babar Comes to America," "The Lion, The Witch, & The Wardrobe" and provided the voices for Snoopy and Woodstock. His numerous accolades include eight Emmy Award wins, seventeen Emmy Award nominations, one Oscar Award nomination, two Peabody Awards, one Clio, three National Cartoonist Society Awards and more than 150 advertising awards.
