During the course of her lengthy career she received numerous Emmy Awards and nominations. Her father was a clothing manufacturer and her mother worked in the insurance industry. She was educated at Northwestern University. She began her career as a scriptwriter for the radio serial "Women in White" in 1948, prior to creating "Search for Tomorrow," which made her one of the earliest women to accomplish such a feat. She served as head writer for the series "The Guiding Light" from 1958 to 1965.
