I believe this Nancy Abernathy to be Nancy Farrar Abernathy, of Giles and Lincoln Counties, TN, who was the wife of William Payne Abernathy,of Pulaski, in Giles County; my Great-great-great Grandparents. They were the parents of Lucinda Caroline Abernathy and The Rev. J. Robert Abernathy. Ann Hamilton Pippin, my cousin, believes that they had another son, Daniel, but I have no further information on that.

Lucinda was born in France (June 22, 1836) because the ship's captain refused to allow Nancy to bear a child on his ship at sea, and put W. P.and Nancy off at Le Havre (actual location not verified), France. The
Abernathys were returning to the United States from London at the conclusion of the First U. S. Consular Trade Mission to the United Kingdom, which went to England about 1832-1834 (I've lost the exact date and can no longer find references), of which W. P. was a member. The 1880 census of Wise County, Texas confirms that Lucinda was born in
France (but not where, exactly).

W. P. was a lawyer, a graduate of the University of Virginia (or so my father told me), and also served as Customs Agent for the Port of New Orleans, which position he was forced to relinquish when Louisiana succeeded from the Union (he refused to turn over the Customs Office
funds he held because he had sworn on taking office to defend his duties to the United States of America). He later practiced law at Pulaski,TN, a fact I have verified. I don't know where or when he died or where
he is buried.

Lucinda Caroline married Frank Newton Hamilton, who became an ordained minister of the Methodist Episcopal Church (South) about 1854 (both marriage and ordination); they are my Great-great Grandparents. It was my understanding that Lucinda's brother, J. R. Abernathy, also was an
ordained Methodist minister (MEC, South), which you appear to have confirmed. Two of Lucinda and Frank Newton's sons also became Methodist ministers: M. L. "Mart", who served in the Dallas-Fort Worth area, and his twin brother, C. W. "Wes", who served in the NE Texas Panhandle.
They were younger brothers to my Great-grandfather, Flavius Newton Hamilton.

It is with a great deal of satisfaction that I have found your findagrave postings. Thank you both.

Unless you disagree with my conclusions, I will post updated information to your Abernathy findagrave pages. I suppose I also need to post findagrave memorials for Lucinda, Frank Newton and Frank Newton's youngest brother, Jasper, all of whom are buried in the Chico City
Cemetery, in Wise County.
