Harry was working as a pattern maker when he enlisted in the U.S. Coast Artillery in 1902. After serving several enlistments there, he served in the Marine Corps, and spent much of his later military career as a member of the 1st Marine Regiment in Quantico, Virginia. He never married.

He is buried in the John Howard plot, near his parents.
