Cyrus worked as a clerk and bookkeeper. He married Clara W. Tyler in Washington, D.C on 16 November 1880.

His father and several of his uncles served as Confederate Army officers. Cyrus himself served as Captain of Company "M", 2nd Virginia Infantry, during the Spanish-American War. Clara later received a pension based on his service.

He entered the National Home for Disabled Volunteer Soldiers in Hampton in 1917, and later died there. His grave in his father's plot, which he shares with Clara, and which is near his stillborn child, is unmarked.
