He served as a 1st Sergeant in the Richmond Light Infantry Blues from 1807 to 1816, and was an honorary member for many years thereafter. During the War of 1812, he served as a Sergeant in the 19th Regiment (Ambler's) of Virginia Militia. He was until shortly before his death, the appointed Weigh Master for the First City Market.
He died age 93, per Cemetery records, and is buried next to his wife in the William Allen plot. In his will, dated 19 October 1863, he freed all of his slaves, either immediately, or upon a certain year or reaching a particular age -- but by his death, all of course had been emancipated by law.
