Civil War Union Naval Officer. He entered the United States Navy with a commission of Third Assistant Engineers on February 21, 1861. He rose to be promoted to 2nd Assistant Engineer on April 21, 1863, to 1st Assistant Engineer on December 1, 1964, and to Chief Engineer on November 20, 1874. He retired on February 17, 1899.
