US Air Force Lieutenant General, Baseball Executive. Born in Freeport, Illinois, he graduated from the U.S. Military Academy in 1930, was commissioned a 2nd Lieutenant and graduated form the Army Air Corps as a pilot in 1931. During World War II, he was assigned to Europe as commander of the 452nd Bomb Group and served as chief of supply of the 9th Air Force Command. After the war, he served in various positions such as the Office of the Secretary of the Air Force, Assistant Chief of Staff at Air Force headquarters and Chief of Staff Tactical Air Command. Promoted Major General in 1955, he served as deputy commander and in 1960, was assigned to Headquarters U.S. Air Force as the comptroller of the Air Force. He retired as a Lieutenant General on April 1, 1961. In 1964, he was elected to the position of Baseball Commissioner and proved to be a good organizer and administrator until he left the office at the end of the season in 1968. He died of a heart attack at age 62 while on vacation in the Bahamas.
