Graveside services for Carroll G. Smith, of Brookhaven, are 1 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 27, at Damascus Cemetery in Franklin County.

Visitation is Saturday from 10 a.m. until noon at Harrigill Funeral Home in Brookhaven.

Mr. Smith, 90, died Sept. 24, 2008, at New Dawn Retirement Center in Ruth. He was born in Franklin County on March 30, 1918, to Johnny Paxton Smith and Maggie Hall Smith.

He retired from Nalco Chemical Company. He was a U.S. Army veteran, who served from 1936 to 1938 in the Panama Canal Zone. And in 1941, he was inducted and assigned to the 95th infantry division and served in the European Theatre. He was honorably discharged in 1945. He was a member of Damascus Baptist Church.

Preceding him in death were his wife, Billie House Smith; his wife, Eloine Buckley Smith; his stepfather, T.W. "Tunie" Vaughn; his stepbrothers, Ingrôm Vaughn and Leighton Vaughn; and his two stepsisters, Jessie Vaughn Godwin and Josie Vaughn Smith.

Survivors are his son, Johnny C. Smith, of Charlotte, N.C.; a sister, Virginia Vaughn Burgess, of Brookhaven; and a sister-in-law, Pauline Vaughn, of Brookhaven.
