at Kingston, Rockingham, New Hamphshire
dwelling in the household of his parents.

Cause of death - Pneumonia;

On 2 March 1881 Stephen went to the Shaker Community at Alfred, York, Maine where he was indentured to Elder John Vance who was the guiding light during Stephen's teenage years.
On 7 March 1891 he signed the Shaker Covenant; vowed to embrace the faith and live a celibate life of service to God and to man.
He worked exceptionally hard for the Shaker community.
He had a good voice and enjoyed singing; He enjoyed gardening, animals, nature, flowers, children; and the children loved him in return. He was kind hearted and a loyal friend.
He remained in this colony until June 1931 when he went to the Sabbath Day Lake Colony at New Gloucester where he remained until his death.

Stephen {Age 61; Single} is recorded on
the 1930 census at Alfred, York, Maine
a member of the United Society of Shakers.

Stephen Gowen, age 64, died Tuesday afternoon in the Central Maine General Hospital at Lewiston following a six week illness of pneumonia.

Stephen suffered from Bright's Disease, his health had been failing for several years; his kidney's were diseased and his heart enlarged.
At his funeral, the family had a spray of 63 pinks, one for each year of his life.
The Shaker Community held no Sunday worship as they mourned their much loved Brother Stephen.
He was universally liked and respected for
his sunny disposition and strict integrity.
He made many friends and never lost one.
