Bela and Bessie married on 19 October 1906
at Oakland, Alameda, California
They were the parents of two sons;
Lloyd Elmer, James William.

In June 1905 Bela graduated from Linfield College at McMinnville, Oregon. Bela attended Leland Stanford Jr University as an English student in 1905-1906
In 1910 Bela became an immigrant inspector with the U. S. Immigration and Naturalization Service. On May 1, 1945, Bela retired as Assistant District Director with the U. S. Immigration.

Bela authored genealogies of the Gowen, Cook, Olds and Coston families including an account of the Olds immigrant party that traveled the Oregon trail in 1851. This account was based on journals and interviews with members of his wife's family who made that trip.

Bela suffered from diabetes and was required to take daily insulin shots.
