Daniel Finn (1825-1887) migrated from Millstreet, County Cork, Ireland to Cardiff, Glamorganshire, Wales around 1858-1859. He worked as a mason's labourer in 1863 and a coal tipper in 1871 in Cardiff, Wales. He migrated from Wales to Jersey City, New Jersey, United States in 1873. Daniel was born in Millstreet, County Cork, Ireland around 1825. He was 46 in the 1871 Wales census which would have him born in 1825. The general rule is to use the document closest to the time of the event to give the most accurate date. He was 69 years and 9 months old at the time of his death, according to his death certificate, which would place his birth in December of 1818 if the death certificate was accurate. The information that the family came from Millstreet came from the obituary of his sister-in-law, Nora Creedon (1829-1904) which said: "Nora, beloved daughter of the late Jeremiah and Johanna Creedon and sister of Mrs. Catherine Finn of Mills Street, Cork, Ireland."

No record of his baptism is extant. The earliest recorded baptisms for Millstreet, County Cork, Ireland in the Diocese of Kerry begin on December 4, 1853.

Marriage:
He married Catherine Creedon (1834-1914) around 1855-1859 in Ireland. There is a Catherine Creedon who married in Cork in 1859 in the Ireland Civil Registration Marriage Index. A search of the parish registers from Millstreet did not find a record of their marriage. Marriage records for Millstreet parish begin on January 14, 1855.

Around 1858-1859 Daniel and Catherine moved from Ireland to Cardiff, Wales. While in Wales he worked as a "coal tipper" according to the birth certificate of Nora, his daughter. The family does not appear in the index of the 1861 census of England and Wales. The family was living in Cardiff, Wales during the 1871 census of England and Wales.

Children:
Together they had the following children: Mary Ann Finn (1859-1885) who was born in Cardiff, Wales; Catherine Elizabeth Finn (1864-1918) aka Kate Finn, who was born in Cardiff, Wales; Nora M. Finn (1865-1898) who was born in Cardiff, Wales and married John Joseph Burke I (1868-1939). There were two more children that died at birth and they are probably buried in Wales or Ireland. The information that there were two dead children comes from the 1880 US census.

In 1873, at age 55, the family moved from Wales to the United States and lived in Jersey City, New Jersey.

In 1880 Daniel and Catherine were living at 270 First Street in Jersey City with their daughter Nora. Their other daughter, Mary A. Finn appears to be working as a housekeeper for James B. Hance, a produce store owner in Jersey City. Daniel's other daughter, Catherine Finn, is working as a servant at the home of L. S. Williard in Jersey City. L. S. Willard was a dry goods salesman. Daniel appears in the 1881 Jersey City directory living at 270 First Street and working as a laborer.

Death:
Daniel died in 1887 of "phthisis pulmonalis" while living at 276 1st Street in Jersey City. phthisis pulmonalis is tuberculosis of the lungs with progressive wasting of the body. He was 69 years and 9 months old according to his death certificate.

Funeral notice:
His funeral notice appeared in the Evening Journal of Jersey City on Saturday, October 15, 1887 and reads as follows: "Finn - On Friday, October 14, 1887, Daniel Finn, aged 69 years. Relatives and friends of the family are respectfully invited to attend the funeral from his late residence, 276 First street, on Sunday at 3 o'clock p.m."

Burial:
Daniel Finn was buried on October 15, 1887 at the Holy Name Cemetery in Jersey City, New Jersey in Blk-S Sec-K Gr-22 1A.

Widow:
Daniel's widow lived until January 1, 1914. She was living with her daughter, Catherine Elizabeth Finn (1873-1918) and her granddaughter, Mary Margaret Burke (1890-1949) at 41 Hopkins Avenue in Jersey City, New Jersey.

Relationship:
Daniel Finn (1818-1887) was the second, great-grandfather of Richard Arthur Norton (1958- ).
