Dr. Archibald Bolling was the son of Archibald Bolling, Jr. of Campbell County, Virginia and his wife, Catherine Payne. He was a graduate of the University of Pennsylvania with a Medical Degree, and practiced in Bedford County, Virginia. He married in Bedford County on 19 May 1835 to Anne Elizabeth Wigginton (b. Bedford County, Virginia 4 August 1809, d. Wytheville, Virginia 8 March 1898), daughter of Benjamin and Harriet Baugh (Scott) Wigginton. The Bollings lived in Bedford County with her parents at "Rose Cottage" on Wigginton Road. They had four children, including Judge William Holcombe Bolling of Wytheville, Virginia; Harriette Wigginton Bolling, the wife of Robert Hodge Waddell of Arkansas; John Blair Bolling, who died as an infant; and Mary Jefferson Bolling, who married Rudolph Teusler. After Dr. Bolling's death, his widow moved to Wytheville, Virginia and lived the rest of her life there with her son, Judge William H. Bolling, and his family. She is buried in Wytheville's East End Cemetery with the family of her son William. Dr. Archibald Bolling was the grandfather of First Lady Edith Bolling Galt Wilson, second wife of President Woodrow Wilson.
