Daniel joined the Confederate Army in September 1862 as a Private in Co. F, 4th Kentucky Infantry, of the famous Kentucky “Orphan” Brigade. He was a brother of John T. Blakeman, and first cousin of Milton Blakeman, all in the same company. Daniel was mortally wounded during the attack of the Orphan Brigade at Murfreesboro, TN, on January 2, 1863, and he fell into the hands of the enemy. Daniel Blakeman was likely buried at the site of a Federal field hospital in or around Murfreesboro, and his unmarked body may have eventually been moved to the mass Confederate grave in Evergreen Cemetery in Murfreesboro. This cenotaph is near his brother John’s grave in the family cemetery.
Cause of death: gunshot wound in battle.
