Famed Gospel Singer, Entertainer. A powerful woman of faith who happened to be an outstanding gospel singer appearing through out the country with her husband Brother Sullivan Pugh as The Consolers. She proclaimed the gospel in songs as they told stories and made sense of it all by connecting their listeners to a traditional sound and theme while delivering an upbeat tone, followed by a deep message of faith and hope. At one point during the long career in the 50s and 60s, they sold more albums than any gospel artist except the Rev. James Cleveland. Sister Iola Pugh made the words of her songs come alive and caused listeners to stop, think and consider. There were many hits including "Waiting For My Child", "If Im Too High", "May The Work I've Done Speak For Me." Miami, Florida was her base and the world was her stage to perform and minister the gospel. The Newport Jazz Festival was just one venue that gave them the chance to perform to a non-traditional audience. Many awards including The Florida Folk Music Award spoke volumes of the impact The Consolers had on the music field in general. She will always be considered one of the "Gospel Greats". Marrying Brother Sullivan Pugh in 1950, they remained together as a great team until her passing at age 68 in October of 1994.
