John Bulow Appleton was born 13 April 1827 and died 18 Oct 1908 in Collinsville, DeKalb County, AL. He married Martha Francis ELLIS, daughter of James Ellis and Ollie Varner on 13 Jan 1853 in Cave Springs, GA. Martha was born 8 Nov 1834 in Cave Springs, GA and died 1 Oct 1908 in Collinsville, DeKalb County, AL. They are buried in Collinsville Cemetery, DeKalb Co., AL.
The Reverend John B. Appleton, first pastor of the First Baptist Church of Ft. Payne and the First Baptist Church of Gadsden, received his education in South Carolina. He attended the Greenwood Academy and other schools before teaching school in Georgia. He joined the Providence Baptist Church in Georgia in 1845. He was ordained to the ministry in February 1855 by the Baptist Church of Collinsville (AL). He was pastor of various churches in the DeKalb County and Cherokee Baptist Association which included St. Clair, Cherokee, DeKalb, Calhoun and Etowah counties. The Reverend Mr. Appleton was moderator of the Cherokee Baptist Association for 34 years, served as representative to the Alabama legislature, and was DeKalb County superintendent of education.

Suggested edit: The Rev John Bulow Appleton 1827-1908 was one of the best known ministers in DeKalb County, Alabama history, and was born in Abbeville District, South Carolina on April 13, 1827. He attended schools in South Carolina and Georgia and taught school in Georgia and Alabama. He married Martha Frances Ellis of Cave Spring, Georgia, and settled in Collinsville, where they reared a family of ten children. In 1855 Appleton began his career as a minister after being ordained by the Pleasant Grove Baptist Church (now Collinsville Baptist Church). He served as pastor of this church for 35 years. While there, he also organized the Fort Payne Missionary Baptist in 1885, when he and the Reverend Bailey Bruce met with 12 Baptists in the old frame school house which stood at the present site of Judge W.M. Beck, Sr.'s home. He then accepted the call of a 19-member congregation to serve as pastor, delivering sermons in Fort Payne on the first Sunday of each month, as well as on the Saturday before the first Sunday. He was pastor of this church until 1888. He also served as pastor of the First Baptist Church of Gadsden. The Reverend Appleton was moderator of the Cherokee Baptist Association (now DeKalb) for 34 years. He also served as a representative to the Alabama legislature and as DeKalb County superintendent of education. He died on October 18, 1908, at the age of 81 and was buried at Collinsville Cemetery.
