Following is an edited extract from the Savannah Morning News (Savannah, GA), dated April 30, 2007.

MSgt. Charles Burton Bass, Jr., USAF (Ret.), 74, of Savannah, Georgia, husband of Freddie Williams Bass, died Saturday afternoon, April 28, 2007, at his home under the care of Hospice Savannah.

Born in Kannapolis, North Carolina, he was a son of the late Charles Burton Bass, Sr. and Nellie Lodine Moore Bass.

Mr. Bass graduated from J. W. Cannon High School in Kannapolis in 1951.

He retired as a Master Sergeant from the United States Air Force after 21 years of service where he served during the Korean Conflict and the Vietnam War.

He later retired from the Chatham County Health Department as an Environmental Technician after 25 years of service.

Surviving are his wife of 52 years, Freddie Williams Bass of Savannah, Georgia; one daughter, Terri Ray; one son, Steve Bass; one brother, Archie Bass of Archdale, North Carolina; five grandchildren.

Funeral service, with full military honors, will be held at 3 o'clock Tuesday afternoon at the graveside, Hillcrest Abbey Memorial Park - East, conducted by The Reverend Dr. Samuel W. Watkins.

AN ASIDE: In the early and mid 1960s, I served with then TSgt Charles Bass in the unique Air Police unit that secured Air Force One and other Special Missions aircraft. I remember him as an outstanding NCO.
