Joseph Ennis was the son of Julia Sterling and Harold Ennis. He entered the U.S. Army during the Korean Conflict. About 1952, he married Patricia Calnan and they had two known children. Following his Army service, Joe enlisted in the U.S. Air Force. One of his unique assignements was with the unit that secured Special Missions Aircraft that transported the President, Congressmen and Dignataries. Consequently, he travelled to many locations in the U.S. and through out the world. His next assignment was a tour in Vietnam where he sustained a combat injury and was awarded the Purple Heart. He received an honorable discharge in 1965, and returned with his family to the home of his birth.

His obituary provides that he was a life member of the Air Force Sergeants Association and the Empire State chapter of the Disabled American Veterans. He was a member of American Legion Post 54, Munnsville. He helped establish the Greater Lenox Ambulance Service.
