Andrew Surabian, 89, of Worcester, passed away suddenly on Sunday, November 8, 2009, at the University of Massachusetts Hospital in Worcester.
Andrew was born in Worcester, MA on August 28, 1920, son of the late Solomon and Mary (Harootunian) Surabian.
Andrew leaves behind his wife of 46 years, Serpouhie (Kiredjian) Surabian, whom he loved dearly. Andrew also leaves behind his three daughters, whom he loved and cherished every day of his life: Margaret Pottle and her husband Stephen of Worcester, Mary Shaw of Leominster, and Andrea Surabian of Worcester; and his three grandchildren, who were the light of his world: AJ and Luke Pottle of Worcester, and Mackenzie Shaw of Leominster.
Andrew also leaves many nieces, nephews, and cousins. He is survived by his brother, Martin Surabian of West Hyannisport and his sister, Surapi Bezdegian of Worcester. He leaves behind his sister-in-law, Carol Surabian;, brother-in-law, Roupen Kiredjian and his wife Ani; sister-in-law, Anahid Armoyan and her husband Sami; and sister-in-law, Takouhie Kiredjian. His sisters: Margaret Surabian and Juliette Grillo, and brothers: Stephen Surabian, Harry "Butch" Surabian, and an infant brother, Harry Surabian, all predeceased him.
Andrew took immense delight in his family and his faith. He instilled in his children a strong work ethic, care and respect for others, optimism, and love of life. His family celebrates him for his generous heart, strength of character, gentle nature, and compassionate soul.
Andrew grew up in Worcester, MA where he graduated from North High School. He enlisted in the United States Army Air Force on October 19, 1942. He served his country proudly in WWII as a gunner on both B-17 and B-29 airplanes and was awarded the Good Conduct Medal, American Theater Campaign Ribbon, and Victory Medal.
Andrew started his own tailoring business in Worcester, Lincoln Tailors, prior to serving in the war. Upon his return home, he began his 48-year career at the United States Postal Service. He was a dedicated employee who was well-liked and admired by his colleagues. He retired as a Postal Supervisor in February, 1992.
He was an active member of the Armenian Church of Our Saviour. He served his church in the Parish Council and attended church services every Sunday. He was an avid gardener and loved taking pictures. The biggest joy of his life was spending time with his family. He will be greatly missed.
Calling hours will be at Nordgren Memorial Chapel, 300 Lincoln Street, Worcester Wednesday, Nov. 11, from 5-8 p.m. A Dahngark Service will be held at 7 p.m. during calling hours. The funeral service will be held at the Armenian Church of Our Saviour, Thursday, Nov. 12 at 11 a.m. Burial, with military honors, will be in Hope Cemetery.
