John "Jack" Tomporis, 89, of Worcester died on Monday, October 11, 2010 in his home after a brief illness.

Mr. Tomporis is predeceased by his wife of 42 years, Linnie D. (Sunderland) Tomporis who died in 1997. He is survived by his three step children, Jerry Sargentelli, Al Sargentelli and Joyce Beeso; three sisters, Irene Rawdon and Katherine Knowlton both of Worcester and Annie Safford of Stuart, FL; 8 grandchildren; many great grandchildren and several nephews and nieces.

Jack was born in Worcester, son of the late George and Ellen Jane (Packard) Tomporis and is predeceased by a brother Nicholas Tomporis and two sisters Helen Aucoin and Virginia Balchunas.

Mr. Tomporis is a veteran of World War II serving in the United States Marine Corps and the United States Air Force. During his seven years of military service he was stationed in many places including Guam and Bouganville. He was awarded the Purple Heart for injuries that he sustained during the Battle of Iwo Jima.

Jack worked for the United States Postal Service as a mail clerk for over 30 years retiring in 1986. He enjoyed bowling at the former Lincoln Lanes and most recently at Auburn Ten Pin and Colonial Bowling. Mr. Tomporis was an avid tennis player and received many tennis awards for his play. He was a member of the All Saints Church, the Greendale Retired Men's Club and the Tatnuck American Legion Post. Jack enjoyed many things in life but was a gifted artist who enjoyed sharing his work with his friends and family.

A graveside service will be held on Thursday, October 14th at 12:30 PM in Hope Cemetery, 119 Webster St. There are no calling hours. Alfred Roy & Sons Funeral Home 12 Hammond St. is directing arrangements.
