John Walter Perry, 88, died Thursday, November 10, 2011, at the Rose Monahan Hospice Residence.

He leaves his wife of 64 years, Eleanora M. (Voellings) Perry; two daughters: Margaret, and her husband Dennis DaRos of South Portland, Maine and Theresa, and her husband Daniel North of Leicester; four grandchildren: John DaRos and his husband Greg Berkel of Melrose, Jeremy DaRos of Portland, Maine, Melissa Perry of Leicester and Michael and his wife Kimberly Perry of Leicester; and three great grandchildren: Rhyen, Damien and Jaedyn. He also leaves two brothers: Joseph Perry of Worcester and Emanuel Perry of Southbridge and several nephews and nieces. A sister, Evelyn Mangsen of Orlando, FL predeceased him.

He was born in Worcester, the son of Manuel and Mary (Corcoran) Perry. He worked for the U.S. Post Office in Worcester, starting as a mail carrier in 1948 and was promoted to foreman of mails in 1966, retiring in 1979. He has been employed as a part time employee working for several area funeral homes for more than 40 years.

Mr. Perry was a member of the Greendale Y.M.C.A., Greendale Retired Men's Club, Central Mass Civil War Roundtable, National Retired Federal Employees, Leicester Historical Society and the 754th Tank Battalion Association.

He was a World War II Army veteran serving as a Sergeant in the South Pacific, campaigning on the islands of New Caledonia, Guadalcanal and Bougainville. He also campaigned on the islands of Luzon and Panay in the Philippines. His unit, the 754th Tank Battalion, was among the first American troops to enter the city of Manila after three years of occupation by the Japanese.

The funeral will be held on Saturday, November 12 from CALLAHAN & FAY BROTHERS FUNERAL HOME, 61 Myrtle Street, Worcester with a 10:00 AM Mass at St. Pius X Church, 1154 Main Street, Leicester. Interment, with military honors, will follow at Pine Grove Cemetery, Leicester. Visiting hours are Friday, November 11 from 5-8 PM in the funeral home.
