Civil War Confederate officer and Honor Medal awardee. Burton was a member of Co. F, 4th Kentucky Volunteer Infantry, CSA, of the famous Kentucky "Orphan" Brigade. He worked his way up through the ranks to 2nd Lt. During the Atlanta Campaign of 1864 Burton was placed in command of the Kentucky Brigade sharpshooters. For this service he was later awarded a medal for gallant and meritorious conduct.
After the war Burton married Sally Bushnell and moved to Georgia, and later to South Carolina, where he became one of the leading Baptist ministers in the area.
Cause of death: suicide by pistol shot
