Civil War Medal of Honor recipient. He served in the U.S. Navy as a Coal Heaver. His citation reads: "On board the flagship U.S.S. Hartford during successful attacks against Fort Morgan, rebel gunboats and the rebel ram Tennessee, Mobile Bay, 5 August 1864. With his ship under terrific enemy shellfire, Dunphy performed his duties with skill and courage throughout this fierce engagement which resulted in the capture of the rebel ram Tennessee." He was wounded in the action, which resulted to bilateral above the elbow amputations of his arms. He did marry and the couple had ten children. Two years of birth are listed for Dunphy. His Medal of Honor citation reads "1840;" his headstone reads "1842." His original pension certificate misspelled his name as "Dumphy." For his widow to receive a pension, this had to changed to match his marriage certificate. His original Medal of Honor was lost on the way to him so a second was issued.
