He is preceded in death by his mother, Marjorie C. Copeland; brother, Henry P. Copeland; and uncle, Leland P. Copeland (Dora).
Survivors include his wife, Doris S. Copeland; sons, William F. Copeland (Joni), and Steven W. Copeland (Christy); brother, William Robert Copeland (Susan); sister-in-law, Mona I. Copeland; grandchildren, Audrey J. Copeland, Wesley Hansford Copeland, and Wilson Steven Copeland; cousins, Ann and Sam Graves; and nieces; nephews; and Richard Copeland (Lynda).
He was a graduate of Birmingham Southern College. Later, he received a Master of Science degree from the University of North Carolina in Geology. He worked at the Geological Survey of Alabama for 34 years, retiring in 1995. Eventually, he rose to the position of Assistant State Geologist, Geologic Mapping and Stratigraphy. As project director, he and a group of others compiled the Geologic Map of Alabama in 1989. It shows the distribution of rock formations and sediments throughout the state and is still used today.
He was a member of Sigma Xi, Scientific Research Society. He was also a charter member of the Alabama Geological Society. Additionally, he was active in the Citizens of Tuscaloosa, and was a volunteer at DCH and DCH Cancer Center for 19 years. He was a member of First United Methodist Church of Tuscaloosa, and was also in the Friendship Sunday School Class, and taught a number of years.
Pallbearers will be Bill Thomas, Charlie Smith, Tony Neathery, Everett Brett, Wade Miller, Wilber Rainey, Jerry Davis, Gene Clements, Alston Shepherd, Don Dejarnette, Everett Smith, and Jack Kidd.
Honorary pallbearers are the Friendship Class, First United Methodist Church of Tuscaloosa, Ala. Geological Survey employees and retired GSA coffee group.
