Michael W. Szabo attended Birmingham-Southern College and graduated in 1961 with a B. S. Degree in Geology. He completed graduate studies in geology at The University of Alabama in 1971.

Michael was employed as a Geologist with the Geological Survey of Alabama in Tuscaloosa from November 1963 until he retired at the end of 1995. Michael began work in the Economic Geology Division of the Survey, later became Chief of the Division and contributed greatly to the mineral resource evaluations of Alabama counties. He was the author of 65 published reports related to mineral resources, engineering geology and geologic mapping.

A career highlight for Michael was the project beginning in 1983 and ending in 1989 to prepare new geologic maps of the state. A previous geologic map of the state, published in 1926, had to be replaced in order to guide resource and industrial development in the state. Michael was familiar with printing techniques and he guided the many exacting steps necessary to complete complex, full color, geologic maps of the rock units occurring at the surface in Alabama.

Michael was a Charter Member of the Alabama Geological Society. He served in all the elected offices and as Treasurer made significant contributions to financial planning.
