Born in 1811, Joel was married and had eight children, ages 9 to 31, when he enlisted on November 14, 1862. He died of disease in the Regimental Hospital at St. Louis on May 1, 1863.

Abraham (b. 1831) served in the Army and survived the war.
Alexander (b. 1843) enlisted in the 6th Iowa Infantry, died in a Memphis hospital of dysentery in July 1863
Francis M. (b.1846) enlisted in the 47th Iowa Infantry in June 1864, served only 4 months before being discharged.
Joel was the son of Obed Blakesley and Ada Hart Blakesley. Obed and Ada were married in Connecticut on March 4, 1801. They had at least one other son who lived in Iowa: Obediah Blakesley (1806 - 1878) -Find A Grave Memorial# 101206670.

Isaac (b. 1831) enlisted in the 39th Iowa Infantry, served 1862-1863 before being discharged
George W. (b. 1833) enlisted in the 18th Iowa Infantry, served 1864-1865.
Andrew L. (b. 1839) enlisted in the 39th Iowa Infantry in 1862, killed in action at the Battle of Allatoona, Georgia, October 5, 1864.
Abraham (b. 1842) enlisted in the 3rd Iowa Cavalry in 1861, discharged at the end of the war in 1865.
Jeremiah (b. 1844) served in the Army and survived the war.
