CHARLES HAGERSTROM
SEVERELY WOUNDED

William Hagerstrom, 549 South
Tenth St., received a telegram from
the War Department yesterday af-
ternoon apprizing him that his son,
Charles, had been seriously wounded
in action August 7th. Young Hager-
strom enlisted with the Grand Rap-
ids cavalry troop, afterwards chang-
ed into a unit of the 120th Field
Artillery, and probably received his
wound on the Soissons-Rheims sec-
tor whither our boys went from the
quiet sector in Alsace where they
received their baptism of fire.

CHAS. HAGARSTROM
DIES FROM WOUNDS

GRAND RAPIDS BOY FIRST TO
DIE IN FRANCE IN WAR
SERVICE
The community was shocked again
last evening by the news that Wm.
Hagerstrom of 549 South 10th St.,
had about six o'clock received from
the war department a telegram tell-
ing of the death of his son, Charles
Hagerstrom from wounds on August
9th. It will be remembered that it
was about this time that the Marsh-
field company lost so large a per-
centage of its effectives. Charles
was in Battery B from Milwaukee
having been transferred from Troop
G, when the Grand Rapids company
was made into an artillery unit. No
particulars have been received and
no one had suspected that Hager-
strom had even been wounded. The
telegram is as follows:
Mr. William Hagerstrom, 549 10th
St., Grand Rapids, Wis.:
"Deeply regret to inform you that
it is officially reported that Private
Charles Robert Hagerstrom, Field
Artillery, died August 9th from
wounds received in action." This
makes Charles Hagerstrom the first
Grand Rapids boy to die in the ser-
vice of his country, so far as is
known.
