Michael "Mike" Douglas Atkins, 69, died on Wednesday, February 10, 2016 at Palmetto Health Richland in Columbia, SC after a brief illness. Mike was born to the late Andrew Foster Atkins, Jr. and Myrtle Louise Atkins in Greenville, SC on June 8, 1946.

Mike was a retired veteran with over thirty years of active duty and reserve service in the Air Force, Air Force Reserve, Army and South Carolina Army National Guard. He earned numerous awards during his military service, including the Air Force Outstanding Unit Award with six devices, the Air Force Organizational Excellence Award, the Air Force Good Conduct Medal with one device, the Air Reserve Forces Meritorious Service Medal with two devices, the National Defense Service Medal with one Device, the Air Force Longevity Service Ribbon with four devices, the Army Achievement Medal with three devices, and the SC Palmetto Service Ribbon. Mike also worked for many years at BMW Manufacturing in Greer, SC until his retirement. Mike resided in the town of Inman and was a lover of music, photography, cars and baseball.

Mike is survived by his son, Andy (Jessica); his daughter, Mary; and his brother, Ronald. He was preceded in death by his parents and his wife, Helen Atkins.

Graveside service was held at Fort Jackson National Cemetery, 4170 Percival Road, Columbia, SC 29229 on Friday, February 19, 2016 at 1 PM. McCollom-Myers Funeral Home assisted the family.
