He served for 20 years in the United States Army. He served in various locations, including a tour in Viet Nam, and retired with the rank of Staff Sergeant. He was a longtime resident of Columbia and retired from a second career with the South Carolina Department of Corrections after 20 years of service as a Corrections Officer. He was known and loved by many and the Eastman home was always a welcome respite for family and friends alike. The Eastmans selflessly opened their doors at different times to nieces and nephews who have lived with them, including: Jeanette, Marcia, Samuel, Sandy and Rolando. Byron was knowledgeable about current events and politics and was always ready to engage in spirited conversation about almost any topic with humor and a quick wit. He was extremely proud of his children and grandchildren and thoroughly enjoyed family get-togethers. While Byron will be sorely missed, his legacy and memory will remain in the hearts of all who loved him.
He leaves his wife of 50 years, Delia Poyser Eastman; daughters: Vernell (Dr. Kenneth) Rogers of Greenville, South Carolina and Dr. Yvette (John H.) Gamble; son: Byron (Dr. Nicole) Eastman, Jr., both of Charlotte, North Carolina; five grandchildren: Chelsea and Joshua Rogers, Jordan Gamble, Marley and Mila Eastman; his brother: Joseph (Rosa) Eastman, a resident of Florida; and many nephews and nieces.
