John was the son of William and Elizabeth (Foreman) Conner. He married Martha Ann Glover in 1816 at the home of William Michael in Preston County. John served near the end of the War of 1812 as a private in Christian Core's Company of the Virgnia Militia. He marched with the company from Bruceton Mills to Morgantown and then to Dunkard's Bottom. Discharged at Dunkard's Bottom, and returned to Morgantown as a peace treaty had been signed. For his service John was granted a bounty land warrant of 160 acres in 1858.
