Mr. Black was a native of Lafayette, where he was born September 15, 1856, a son of Isaah and Martha Tolman Black. He was married to Emma Yount on December 1, 1881.
Mr. Black taught school in Clinton County over a period of forty years. All of his time was spent in Madison and Washington townships. He taught six years at Hamilton, nine years at the Pay district and 25 years at Mattix corner.
Mr. Black was a member of the Pleasant Hill Presbyterian Church, where he also served as superintendent of the Sunday school. He was also a member of the Dakota Tribe, local tribe of Red Men.
Surviving near relatives are the widow; one daughter, Mrs. M.R. Rothenberger, Frankfort; a son, Floyd T. Black of West Lafayette; and several grandchildren.
