Known as William Cowell by the 1860 census, he was born William Richards, probably in Harrison County, (West) Virginia, and "bonded" by the Overseers of the Poor in that county, to Mathias Cowell in 1847. His birthdate is given variously as April 4, 1841, April 5, 1843 and April 4, 1846. He served in the (West) Virginia 15 Infantry, Company A, from 1862 to 1865.
His wife, Bertha Jane Mason Cowell, whom he married in 1869, and who died in 1891, is buried in the same cemetery in an unmarked grave, or possibly under a stone that reads "B.J.C."
