Our remarkable husband, father, grandfather, brother, uncle, cousin, friend, and community pillar, Morton Sollod, passed away on November 3, 2015 in Burbank, California. Morton was born in Baltimore, MD on December 13, 1923 to Harry and Ida Sollod. Soon the family, including his siblings, Norman and Lenore, moved to Petersburg, Virginia where he had an amazing childhood. Mort attended Virginia Tech and graduated from University of Virginia after joining the Navy and serving on the USS Grundy and the USS St. Paul. He met the love of his life, Elaine Byer, whom he married on January 18, 1953. After having their four children, Susan, Randie, Stuart, and Ira, the family moved to Burbank, California. There, Morton worked for Lockheed and became a beloved and admired figure in the Burbank community. Like his wife, he believed in volunteering and opening his heart and home to others. He coached the boys' basketball team, was active with Indian Guides, Girl Scouts, and Campfire Girls. He also spent time teaching English to adults at the local library, volunteered many years at the Gene Autry Museum and Burbank Farmer's Market, and was President of Brotherhood at Temple Emanu El. Morton and Elaine traveled to visit their seven grandchildren to support them in sporting events, recitals, talent shows, birthdays, and graduations. The couple shared their joyous spirit with the rest of the world as they enjoyed their travels to Alaska, Israel, Mexico, Europe, and the Bahamas. Morton was known for his blue 1957 VW bug, his love of the Lakers and the Dodgers, and his National Geographic collection. He enjoyed playing tennis, ping pong, Rummy Tile, and riding his bike through town. Morton was preceded in death by his dear wife, Elaine and his loving daughter, Randie. He is survived by his children Susan (Michael), Stuart (Toni), Ira (Caren), son-in-law Jim, grandchildren Julie, Ryan (Sydney), Sarah, Emily (Carlos), Michael, Hannah, and Lisa and many loving family members. He will be remembered for his generosity, constant welcoming smile, contagious laugh, lighthearted jokes, and gifts of wisdom. One of his favorite poems was "The Dash" by Linda Ellis. His life was a dash that we can all aspire to have.
