The crash occurred around 7 p.m. on 144th Street and Cameron Road, just east of Kearney, Mo., and north of Clay County's Midwest National Air Center. The helicopter had flown from the Heartland Regional Medical Center in St. Joseph, Mo. to Bethany to pick up the patient. The helicoptor was en route to Liberty and had intended to stop at an airport in Mosby for fuel.
He graduated from Wright (Wyo.) High School in 1996 and attended Black Hills State University in Spearfish. James served in the United States Army at Fort Riley, Kan. He served two tours of duty in Iraq.

James is also survived by his soon to be born daughter: Reagan James Freudenberg; his parents, Richard and Carol Kay Freudenberg, and his brother, John and Connie Freudenberg, all of Lincoln, Neb.; his grandmother, Marvel Freudenberg-Moore of Gurley, Neb.; father- and mother-in-law, Terry and Ruth Boehnke of Watertown; brother-in-law, Andy and his wife, Tami, of Tea, S.D.; and his grandfather-in-law, Bob Boehnke of Watertown. He is also survived by his nieces and nephews, Amber Max, Stephanie Max, Sean Freudenberg, Kaitlyn Freudenberg and Braxton Freudenberg, all of Lincoln, and Taylor Boehnke of Tea; his close friends, Cory and Capella Albrecht, CJ Albrecht and Whit Albrecht of Manhattan, Kan. James will also be missed by his two dogs, Dalton and Emmett
Funeral services were held on Thursday, Sept. 1, at the Hope Lutheran Church (WELS), 3560 Dempsey Road in Manhattan, with Pastor Phil Hirsch officiating. Full military honors followed with the United States Army Honor Guard Fort Riley. Interment was at the Black Hills National Cemetery near Sturgis at a later date.
