US Congressman. Born in Westminster, Vermont, he studied law, was admitted to the bar in 1826 and commenced to practice in Colebrook, New Hampshire. He moved to Newport, New Hampshire in 1834, assumed editorial management of the New Hampshire Argus newspaper, was commissioned as adjutant in the New Hampshire State militia in 1837 and was brigade inspector in 1838. In 1839, he was elected as a Democrat to the Twenty-sixth, Twenty-seventh and Twenty-eighth Congresses, serving until 1845. Not a candidate for renomination, President Polk appointed him Commissioner of Patents and he served (1846-50). He then resumed the practice of law in Newport, New Hampshire and served as a presiding member of the New Hampshire State Board of Agriculture, (1867-71). He died at age 73 in Newport, New Hampshire.
