Survived by wife of 62 years, Adeline; children, Mary, David (Jeff), Paul (Jean), John (Geri) and Ruth; grandchildren, Kirsten (Chris), Erin (Matt), Ellen, Eric, Bryan, Miela, and Danny; sisters, Myra (Bob) and Lyla; brother, Maynard (Edna); sister-in-law, Helen; many nieces and nephews.
Alton received his Doctorate from Columbia University. He was a Professor of Education at the University of North Dakota for 22 years and at Illinois State University for 15 years before he retired in 1983. In his 37 years as a professor he worked with many graduate students who became educators throughout the Midwest.
Alton was active in the Lutheran Church for many years.
