John J Barnes, who states birth in Virginia on 9/30/1830, has a CSA pension application in the GA Archives Virtual Vault under Monroe Co. He says he enlisted in Aug 1862 in Shelbyville, Tn and served with Company C of the 37th GA Vols. He was not with his unit at the surrender, because he was captured near Decatur, Ala in Nov. 1864. He was in prison at Camp Douglas, Ill. until the war was over. He stated he had lived in Georgia since March of 1857.
