Aviator. She was adopted by Mustafa Kemal Atatürk, the founding father of the Republic of Turkey, after asking to speak with him in 1925, seeking better educational opportunities. She then went to live at the Çankaya Presidential Residence, and she attended the Çankaya Primary School in Ankara and the Üsküdar American Academy in Istanbul. She was the first aviator in Turkey and a fighter pilot. "The Guinness Book of World Records" recognizes her as the first female combat pilot in the world, flying 23 different military operations. She flew about 8,000 hours. In 1981 her book "A Life Along the Path of Atatürk" was published. In October 1988, she was awarded an Honorary Ph.D. by the Selcuk University in Konya, Turkey. In 1996, the United States Air Force issued a poster and included her on it as one of "The 20 Greatest Aviators in History." The Istanbul Sabiha Gökçen International Airport in Turkey was named after her in January 2001.
