A funeral for Alice Ashwell of McMinnville will be held at 10 a.m. Friday in the chapel of Macy & Son Funeral Directors, McMinnville. The Rev. Doug Rose of the First Christian Church, McMinnville, will officiate.

Interment will be in Evergreen Memorial Park, McMinnville.

The funeral home will be open for visitation from 4 to 7 p.m. today.

Mrs. Ashwell died Jan. 23, 2001, in her home. She was 71.

She was born May 21, 1929, in Wheatland, the daughter of Archie Benjamin and Gertrude Alice Versteeg Davidson. She attended grade schools in Wheatland and Gopher Valley, then attended fourth through eighth grades in Sheridan.

She and Eugene Thomas were married in December 1945 in Sheridan.

After marrying, she lived in Gopher Valley until 1948, when she moved to Brookings. She worked in the family business, Red's Drive-in, in Brookings. As a young mother, she volunteered in 4-H Clubs, home extension and school events, and served on the school board. She also belonged to several bowling leagues. She moved in 1970 to McMinnville, where she worked at Oregon Mutual Insurance and Goodwill.

Her first husband died in 1984.

She and Russ Ashwell were married July 14, 1995, in The Dalles.

The couple settled in McMinnville. Mrs. Ashwell belonged to the women's auxiliaries of the Elks and Eagles. She enjoyed dancing, playing cards, fishing, gardening and spending time with her family.

Survivors include her husband; a daughter, Sonja Olheiser of McMinnville; two sons, Jan Thomas of McMinnville and Tommy Thomas of Portland; a brother, Beryl Davidson of Brookings; a stepson, Larry Ashwell of Missoula, Mont.; two stepdaughters, Teresa Kerzan of Lafayette and Kathleen Fisbeck of Waldport; seven grandchildren; and eight great-grandchildren.
