Marshall was the son of John Welch and Harriett (Fletcher) Burwell. He was born in New York City on April 14, 1889. The family moved to New Haven, Connecticut where they appear in the 1900 Census. Marshall went to work as a clerk for the New York, New Haven and Hartford Railroad, and eventually was a senior land appraiser. He had a wonderful bass singing voice and was a bass soloist at Yale University's Battell Chapel for many years. He led the NYNHH RR Glee Club and was a member of several male acappella singing groups. He married Deronda Jackson, daughter of Frederick Martin and Lillian (Sherman) Jackson, on 12 Sep 1912 and they had one son, Robert Jackson Burwell, born Feb 8, 1814.
