Fran was a dedicated call fireman, highly trained snd skilled scuba diver, Eagle Scout, scout pack cubmaster and all-around great guy. He was a certified diving instructor and owned and operated his own dive shop on his property on South Street in Wrentham, Massachusetts. He was a loving son, brother and dad and a loyal & helpful friend. He never lost his dedication and love for his community or his sense of adventure.

He was only 37 when he died at sea on the charter boat the "Wahoo" out of Fire Island NY, during a chartered diving excursion of the Andrea Doria wreck. His depth gauge read 230FSW. It had been a dream of his since he was a young boy. It is referred to as "the Mount Everest of wreck diving."

He was the second diver to have lost his life doing this deep and dangerous descent. His fatal dive and his attempted rescue is chronicled in the book-- Deep Descent: Adventure and Death Diving the Andrea Doria by Kevin F. McMurray. It is not a pleasant read of the documented account of his last hours, but it is detailed in their attempts to try to save him once he had surfaced suddenly and had been taken aboard the vessel.

Sadly, 22 divers have lost their lives diving this wreck. The shear danger of the dive and the depth of the sunken wreck still attracts the daring do regardless of all the deaths it can lay claim to.
