Revolutionary War Major General. A Boston, Massachusetts book seller, he gave up his business to volunteer in the colonists' effort against England. He fought in battles at Bunker Hill, Princeton, Brandywine, Germantown and Monmouth. Recognizing that the Continental Army needed heavy artillery he devised a plan to transport fifty-five cannons, howitzers and mortars and over a ton of lead through the snow on sleds from Fort Ticonderoga to Boston. This action caused the British to flee Boston. He was named the Colonel of the Continental Regiment of the Artillery. He had a major role in the British surrender at Yorktown as he was in charge of the placement of the artillery. After the war he served as Secretary of War for the Confederation from 1785 to 1789 and under the Constitution in George Washington's cabinet from 1789 to 1794.
