FURGIONE, JOHN ANTHONY, 93 - of Hammonton, passed away on Thurs. Oct. 6, 2005 following a lengthy illness.

Born in Philadelphia in 1912, he was raised in the Rosedale section of Hammonton and lived on 22nd St. in Hammonton since 1945. John came from a large family and needed to quit high school during the depression to help support his younger brothers and sisters.

From his early working years in the brickyard and later at Pennbrook Clothing Factory he never lost sight of the value of an education. While working he spent nights obtaining his high school diploma and went on to complete electrician's school, eventually working for RCA and Ancora State Hospital. He later instilled this emphasis on a quality education to his two sons and granddaughter.

One of John's passions was sports. He played on Rosedale's semi pro baseball team and spent time as a boxer. His workout routine was ahead of his time. He was an avid jogger, back when it was referred to as "road work". He lifted free weights until he was 89. He was the long time player's agent for the Hammonton Little League. There is a plaque on the Wall of Fame honoring his lifetime dedication.

He was regarded by virtually everyone as a genuinely "nice guy". John was a devoted husband, father and grandfather who was happiest when he was home with his family.

Predeceased by his wife of 59 years Anna, his parents Anthony and Jennie Furgione, and brothers James and Tom, John is survived by his sons Robert (Patricia) of Hammonton, and John (Ann) of Medford; sisters Tessie Pierce of Kalamazoo, Ml, Lucy Ludlow and Rita Shields both of Florida and brother Joseph of Bellmawr; loving grandfather of Lauren Furgione of Fairfax, VA dear uncle of many nieces, nephews and cousins.

Relatives and friends are invited to attend his viewing on Mon. 9:00am at St. Joseph Church 3rd & French Streets Hammonton. Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 10:00am at the church. Burial will be in Greenmount Cem.
