He was the current chief of the Etowah-Horse Shoe Volunteer Fire Department. He joined the fire department Dec. 1, 1980, and proudly served his community through the department. He was active in the Henderson County Firemen's Association. During his 24-year commitment to the department, he held the positions of delegate to the WNC Firemen's Association, public relations, fire prevention junior training officer, lieutenant, daytime training officer, captain senior training officer and assistant chief.
He began in 1981 as an assistant football coach for the West Henderson Youth Football Association. This led to the 21-year commitment to the West Henderson Youth Football Association as well as the WNC Youth Football Association.
He was a loving son, father and friend to the community and will be greatly missed by his two children, Donald Edward Gash and Jennifer Leslie Gash; and all that knew him.

"One of the most anticipated trials in memory fizzled out Tuesday when Gail Gash reached a surprise plea deal in the death and dismemberment of her husband.
Mrs. Gash, 52, pleaded guilty Tuesday to the second-degree murder of her husband, Don Gash, avoiding the possibility of life in prison. Judge J. Marlene Hyatt sentenced her to 15 to 19 years in prison."
2-5-2010 Mrs. Gash died on this date, in prison.
