The son of William & Mary May, in 1860 he was a laborer living with and/or working for German-born Frederick Reel, with whom his German-born mother and his siblings were living and who gives the appearance of having been his stepfather. He stood 5' 3" tall with light hair and gray eyes and is in the 1860 census by his middle name and apparently was known that way throughout his life.

A Civil War veteran, he enlisted at the overstated age of eighteen and mustered into federal service at Norristown, Montgomery County, Pennsylvania, August 26, 1864, as a private with Co. A, Pennsylvania Cavalry (117th Pa), and honorably discharged with his company July 14, 1865.

He married Mary Catherine Kerr June 15, 1867, in Washington County, Maryland, and fathered Harry H. (b. 06/??/69) and possibly two others who may not have survived infancy. By 1870, he was living with his family in Harrisburg where he died of "pulmonary tuberculosis."
